Why krav maga beats shooting for bodyguards

27 March 2018 A shooter against an attacker at five, three and two metres. Filmed, not argued.

There is no better theory than good practice.

Let us run a simple experiment.
Take an IPSC shooter with an open sports holster, safety off, a round in the chamber. Against him, put a reasonably mobile guy with, let us say, bad intentions.

Set the distance at 5 metres.
Arm the “attacker” first with a stick, then with a knife.

The conclusion for 5 metres under these conditions?
— There is quite enough time to get the shot off.

Now cut the distance to 3 metres. What do we get?

At three metres the ability to fend off the attack is still there, but with the caveats that the shooter is fully concentrated on the target and that all his sports gear is tuned for a fast shot.
An attentive viewer will also notice that at three metres his stance changes in favour of shooting from the hip.

And now let us switch “sport” off and “reality” on: remove the open sports holster, put a suit on him, make him disengage the safety and chamber a round — we are talking about law-abiding bodyguards, right? And add a little stress by placing three random attackers in front of him. How do the results at 5 and 3 metres change?
Think about your answer before you watch.

And yet there are bodyguard courses built entirely on firearms training — very good business indeed; a quick look at the economics of it is enough to identify the beneficiary.

In the United Kingdom, for instance, protection details routinely work without firearms at all. So does the police, by the way. And that changes the whole tactical picture of close protection training.

So what could a trained bodyguard do in such situations if he had solid krav maga skills:
